504 Information

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act

The 504 plan refers to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act, which specifies that no one with a disability can be excluded from participating in federally funded programs or activities, including elementary, secondary or postsecondary schooling. When there is concern that a student exhibits a mental or physical impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, the student may be eligible for a 504 plan. A referral may be made to the school’s 504 coordinator, as listed below.

Grievance Procedure

The grievance procedure is formally outlined in the regulation. Following is a brief summary of the procedure.

If you have an unresolved concern regarding your child’s 504, please contact the School 504 Coordinator listed above. This staff member will complete the initial evaluation of all allegations, reasonable accommodations (if required), and re-evaluations. If your concern is still unresolved, the principal of your child’s school will investigate the situation and offer a resolution. We want to work with you to resolve any concerns; however, if you still have an unresolved concern, after receiving a written reply from the principal, the 504 Officer, listed below, will become involved to further assist in resolving your concern.
